KStew: love her or hate her, you probably have an opinion about her. Personally, I think she's a phenomenal actress who was horribly miscast as Bella, or, at least, the victim of terrible direction for that role which, for the sake of continuity, she is stuck with throughout all five films, even though the director in question is long gone. A little perusal through her IMDB profile shows that she's been in 23 movies so far (she has several in the works, but 23 have been released), and, of those, I have seen 12. More than half (just barely). Here is what I thought of the non-Twilight movies.
As I said, I think she's a fantastic actress, when she's not playing Bella. I first saw her in Panic Room, playing Jodi Foster's daughter. I thought it was a great movie, and I thought she was great in it. Child actors don't often get a lot of credit, but she had a ton to carry off in that movie, and she brought her A-game.I didn't even realize she was in Into the Wild until I started watching it. Then she picked up an acoustic guitar and sang a beautiful and haunting song, and I was like, "Damn. Maybe she will be okay as Bella." Her role isn't large, but she rocks it. The movie is fucking harrowing, but so, so good.
I rented a few to check out her other work - Speak, a movie Twired Jen posted about last week, is about a girl traumatized by rape and shunned by her classmates, and it was a really moving performance by the Stew.
The Cake Eaters is about a girl with Friedreich's Ataxia, a genetic disease that causes progressive damage to the nervous system. The physical commitment that Kristen brought to the role of Georgia, the afflicted, was absolutely amazing. Anyone who doubts she can inhabit a character completely should see this movie. Such a powerful performance. It's about living life to its fullest, and I found it really affecting.
In the Land of Women is about a shiftless 20-something taking care of his grandmother. KStew and Meg Ryan and their family live across the street from Grandma (who is awesomely portrayed by a grouchy Olympia Dukakis). This was a strange movie - Adam Brody (who plays the shiftless guy) scowls through most of the film. Kristen's role is pretty much "angsty teenager," but she has a lovely moment with Meg Ryan in a hospital scene. The girl can act, I kid you not.
I recently watched The Safety of Objects, which was actually made before Panic Room, so it's shrimpStew and she gets mistaken for a boy partway through. I spent a lot of this movie thinking much worse things were going to happen to the characters (who have all been affected by a shared traumatic loss) than ever actually ended up happening, so it was a stressful movie for me! But great performances all around.
Two movies I don't recommend checking out, despite their KStew-containment: What Just Happened (she plays Robert DeNiro's daughter, and she's good, but the movie is all over the place), and Jumper (really weird and lame "sci-fi" movie about a douchebag - a.k.a grown-up Anakin - who can jump from one exotic locale to another for no good reason. TH calls it "Dumper").
"You didn't like Jumper?"Adventureland was awesome and made me super jealous of Kristen and all the hot guys she gets to make out with - Ryan Reynolds, in this case. Yum. Of course, Adventureland fits nicely into my high-school-years fetish (as described in Saturday's FF post), so I was predisposed to liking it. I still recommend it if you haven't seen it. Another angsty teen role for her, but I guess when you're an angsty teen, those are the parts you're gonna get.
I still need to see The Yellow Handkerchief, Welcome to the Rileys, and, of course, The Runaways. I look forward to renting them. But now, you tell me, what do you think of our Ms. Stewart's acting abilities? Have you seen any of these movies (or others of hers)? What do you think?

Happy Belated Birthday!! Sorry I missed it yesterday.
The only other Stew movie I saw was Catch That Kid. I think she was good in it. Oh, and Adventureland, but I didn't really like that movie. I agree with you though, good actress, not so good Bella. She has moments that I am impressed with in how well she delivers things in the Twi movies, but still just doesn't hit me as Bella.
And IMO, she is rockin as a blond!! I love her like that.
Well you already know how I feel. I think she's a fantastic actress. I found her to be perfect for Bella, but then again I knew she was playing Bella when I started to read Twilight.
YOU MUST SEE THE RUNAWAYS. It's awesome. It's not available for rent on On Deman. Woohoo!
I loved Adventureland. Catch That Kid was cute. I saw Jumper on a plane but don't remember her in it at all (of course I didn't like the movie either so I am not surprised). The rest of the movies are all on my Netflix list :) I think she is a good actress and even without Twilight I would still watch her movies.
Wait, KStew was in Jumper (which is a shitty movie)?
TBH, I didn't even remember her from Into The Wild (which rocked).
I thought she was a terrific actress until I started watching interviews with her, and I saw that she pretty much twitches and bites her lip the same as Bella. And she did this in Adventureland as well, which was shot before Twilight. I will have to see more of the films she starred in, so that I could make up my mind on whether she can act. But, I'm going to take your word for it, as I totally trust your judgment, MB. :D
I still can't stop lamenting the fact that Ellen Page wasn't cast as Bella. She would've brought such wonderful, refreshing dimension for the character. Oh well.
@LwE - I love her as a blonde, too! She's gorgeous.
@Jen - I read the books after the first movie came out, too, so I'm not sure why she doesn't work for me. The acting has a lot to do with it, but I blame CHardwicke for her direction, as well.
@DD & Jelena - isn't Jumper terrible? Ugh.
@Jelena - I'm sorry I caused your lamentations with my recasting, LOL!! I just saw Inception, and I'm still convinced EP would have been the perfect Bella...
It is funny how in Adventureland, Speak, and Twilight she plays awkward, shy, having to keep quiet about a secret. I had seen Speak long before Twilight and was really affected by it so I think that may have helped me like KS in Twilight more. But I can see why you think she was miscast. Based on your choice it seems like you would have preferred an actress who was a little more naturally "bright and cheery" for the role.
I want to see more of her movies, especially when I see clips used in fanfiction videos. But I wonder if your opinion of KS as Bella will change based on how she plays Bella the vamp/mother. Or, maybe mine will. LOL
MB – I agree KStew was miscast as Bella – and I agree with your replacement wholeheartedly
I’ve seen panic room (I thought she was a boy) – but her performance was remarkable. You can definitely see how Jody Foster has been her mentor- they share many of the same mannerisms & speech pattern.
Cake Eaters- I enjoyed this movie overall – it took me quite a while to figure out it was actually KStew. Besides- I really am a sucker for Jesse L Martin (step father)… anywho.. I hope she does a better ‘romantic’ scene in BD.
I’ve also seen Jumper- which wasn’t a complete turn off- I was surprised by her appearance in the film…
@TT - no, not "bright and cheery," just not twitchy and emotionally connected. KStew can do emotion, but in Twilight she's not available. I find her very stiff and twitchtastic. Less so in Eclipse, but still stiff and wooden most of the time.
@Jayla - I LOVE Jesse L Martin! He was in the original RENT cats and n the movie, and I love me some Law & Order. He was great in Cake Eaters.
You know I have to respectfully disagree with your opinion of KStew's acting. I've seen several of her movies because I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt after seeing how awful she was in Twilight. My opinion didn't change. I think she acts the same in every movie which is the same as her own personality as seen in interviews. I'm not impressed...at all.
No worries, Mox. We can still be buds. At least we agree that she shouldn't be Bella, right? ;)
